Tasting Notes for 1997 Sunstone Merlot

A very good merlot, and as of this tasting the highest-rated merlot on this list. It was smooth and not at all astringent. Flavors of pure merlot grape, subtle warm Bing cherries, and subtle, mellow dark chocolate dominate. The nose shows a subdued Merlot fruitiness. Served with grilled chicken, asparagus with mustard seeds, and seasoned, peeled baby potatoes. Quite drinkable and quite good. I paid $16 for the bottle. [April 2000]
