Joshua McGee's Review of

What is this all about?

Judging by the number of registered sites, websites with numbers as domain names are quite popular, both with developers and with investors.

Writing a number in digits [like 37] gives you 100 websites [of the form www.37.com] from zero to ninety-nine, inclusive. Writing a number without hyphens gives you another 100 sites [of the form www.thirtyseven.com]. Writing a number with hyphens gives you a final 72 sites.

Here's a quick glance at the distribution of those 272 sites:

Rank Type Number Percent
1. "Parked" / Reserved Domains 94 35%
2. Unregistered 59 22%
3. No DNS Entry 49 18%
4. Design 8 3%
4. ISP 8 3%
4. Unknown 8 3%
5. Pornography 7 3%
6. Software 6 2%
6. Informational Website 6 2%
7. Musical Group 4 1%
8. Communications / Media / Publishing 3 1%
9. Other: Computer Hardware, Dude Ranch, Magazine, Athletic, Consulting, Bank, Retail 9 3%

>> but this only adds up to 261!

As you can see, more than a third have been registered by that new breed of annoying 'investors' (read 'extortionists') who speculate on the future values of domain names. [Full disclosure: With the advent of RegisterFREE I have secured a couple myself. One I may develop, the other was purchased solely as a speculative investment.] The next largest group are the domain names that are unregistered. This group is populated entirely by hyphenated (www.thirty-seven.com-type) domains.

I will do more interesting things with these sites [Actually, it seems like I never will, seeing as how I have done nothing of note with this page in over a year.] Until then, here is a selection of sites among the 272 that I consider to be cool:
  • www.thirty-three.com: This band made this entire review project worth it! What a find! An excellent rock band from Toronto, Ontario whose songs get stuck in my head for hours at a time. On their fine site, you can listen to their entire album in RealAudio. "Rich Happy" is their single, but I suggest "Undone."
  • www.fiftyeight.com: My description used to be "a graphic design company (?)," but I've been instructed to change it to "newschool3Dcharacterstylescompany from stinky germany." Whoever they are, they have some of the best Shockwave-enhanced pages I've seen. Quite a pleasurable site to visit.
  • www.fortyone.com: A consulting company with some very clever Javascript programming on their splash page.
  • www.fortythree.com: The band "Towards an End." Their site is conceptually clever.
  • www.97.com: Researchpaper.com, "the Web's largest collection of topics, ideas, and assistance for school related research projects."
  • www.forty.com: Forty Software, who makes the free utility Download Wonder, a ZDNet Editor's Pick.
  • www.fortyfour.com: I have no idea what this 'under construction' site will eventually be, and frankly I'm somewhat frightened. But in the mean time, they have a rather engaging animated logo on their page.
  • www.sixtythree.com: "The 63 Ranch history dates from 1863 (hence its name)." According to the site, "it was the first dude ranch in Montana declared a National Historic Site." Now, you can't beat that, can you?
  • www.37.com: Check 37 search engines simulatenously.

I am in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the above sites, although I certainly wouldn't mind being affiliated with or being endorsed by a few of them.

There are other cool sites, of course. If you think one should be added, let me know.

Please email me with suggestions, complaints, or sites not listed as cool which you feel should be.
