GeoIP for WAC

Tue, 24 Apr 2007 14:44:16 -0500

Turns out GeoIP is my friend.  I ran it on my log files, and found eighteen more locales that have visited my site, according to their IP-allocation database: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Serbia and Montenegro, United Kingdom (in the .gb rather than .uk TLD), Jamaica, Kuwait, Laos, Libya, Mongolia, Macao, Namibia, Nigeria, Panama, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Sudan, Senegal, and Somalia.

New countries for March 2007

Thu, 12 Apr 2007 01:26:35 -0500

Got some tricky ones in March.  Myanmar was searching for My hamsters keep biting each other in Google.  Saint Thomas and Principe was looking at my post about poisoned zoo animals.  And, ever popularly, .name hit my Lacuna Coil trackback, in addition to a terrorism post, a Modafinil post, a post about Jerry Falwell, Kill Bill, and many other trackbacks (probably spamming).

(Cool, Four-Walled World just came on my music rotation.)

Welcome, New Countries!

Sun, 18 Mar 2007 23:35:19 -0500

It’s been a while since an update.  Welcome, Algeria, Montserrat, Mozambique, Former USSR, El Salvador, Tunisia, and Saint Vincent and Grenadines!

Algeria was looking for Lacuna Coil.  So was Tunisia.  Montserrat looked at my family filter page.  Mozambique was interested in my Pearl Jam mp3s, as was El Salvador.  Former USSR looked at a lot, including my resume.  And finally, Saint Vincent and Grenadines repeatedly looked at my root page.

Welcome, St. Helena

Fri, 14 Jul 2006 00:56:23 -0500

Welcome, visitor from St. Helena (.sh)!  They visited lots of web posts nearly simultaneously, including the original WAC post.  I don’t know how they found me, but they were using IE 6.0.

Welcome, Antigua and Barbuda

Fri, 30 Jun 2006 00:18:57 -0500

Welcome, visitor from Antigua and Barbuda (.ag)!  This is a bit of an odd one, as the referrer log lists the agent as MSIECrawler, meaning, apparently, that someone bookmarked a page on mcgees.org while offline.  Normally this would be followed up by the application downloading the site when the user is next online, but this didn’t happen (or hasn’t yet happened.)

Welcome, Albania

Sun, 25 Jun 2006 08:19:16 -0500

Welcome, visitor from Albania.  Distressingly, he or she was searching for “yahoo login cracker download” on Google, which matches my site because of a visitor comment that I allowed rather than deleted.  It is to be hoped that the site will welcome more respectable visitors from Albania in the near future.

Regardless, though, 152 down, 112 to go.

Welcome, Armenia

Welcome, visitor from Armenia (.am)!  He or she searched Google Armenia for information on Megaproxy and found my Best of the Web page.

Welcome, Samoa

Welcome visitor from Samoa!  He or she was searching for a “Stamp Album from U.S.” on Google and found my Stamp Albums Page.

Welcome, Isle of Man

I’d like to welcome our new visitor from the Isle of Man!  He or she visited the Review of www.[number].com page using Firefox.

TLD WAC

Tue, 11 Apr 2006 21:44:00 -0500

There are 264 TLDs (top-level domains) that the analog log analysis software knows about. TLDs are things like “.com”, “.org”, “.us”, and “.uk” that you find at the end of domain names. And for several years I have been keeping track of the TLDs of visitors to mcgees.org. My goal is to have a visitor from each TLD, the internet equivalent of a ham’s “Worked All Countries”. This may not be feasible — some TLDs may be obsolete, and some will just be damned difficult, like “.kp”, North Korea — but I’m keeping track of it. You can follow the progress
of my domain visitors here.  As of yesterday, I knew of visits from 141 TLDs.

Today, though, I ran jdresolve on my log entries, which does lookups on unknown IP addresses, and nabbed seven more: Air Transport Industry, Bahrain, Kenya, Monaco, Maldives, Togo, and Tanzania! I’m now at 148. Stay tuned.

Luoyang

Fri, 30 Jan 2004 21:48:20 -0600

Luoyang City in Henan Province, China (see map below) is where I am sending a $1 book for which the recipient is paying $9 shipping.  Amazingly small world.
