Cool Hand Luke on my queue

At my last job, several years ago, we were sitting around at lunch discussing the topic of sampling in music.  I cited a few instances I could think of, including the famous monologue from the film Cool Hand Luke being sampled in rock band Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Civil War.

One of my colleagues scoffed and said, “I don’t expect many Guns ‘n’ Roses fans have seen Cool Hand Luke!”

I was about to indignantly reply, “Hey, I like Guns ‘n’ Roses!”  But I stopped myself.  There’s an obvious comeback: “And have you seen Cool Hand Luke?”  I hadn’t, so I kept my mouth shut.

I still don’t grok why being a GnR fan would negatively correlate with having seen the film.  But my not having seen it is probably inexcusable.  So I’ll repair that deficiency soon, and do a moviemath entry on it.

Speaking of watching movies, I recently came across this article about (the recently discussed by us) Wolfgang Petersen watching High Noon (one of my all-time favorite movies). At the conclusion, I couldn’t help but acknowledge that Petersen certainly understands the craft of movie-making.

Then last night Jaimee put on the Petersen-directed Neverending Story. Shit sandwich.

You hadn’t seen Neverending Story?  And you didn’t like it?  Wow.  On both counts.

I had seen it, but not for many, many years. If you haven’t watched it in a long time, don’t. Keep it pure and pristine in your mind. I’m a fan of children’s movies. I’m a fan of children’s movies from that era. It’s not that I’m too old to enjoy it or that it doesn’t hold up against the children’s movies of today; that movie is just a shit sandwich.

Like… a really tasty shit sandwich?

So, have you seen Cool Hand Luke yet?  I think its a great movie.  Nominated  for 4 Oscars and won 1…not that means much to me….

BTW….your program didn’t like the response “6….mostly” to the question, “What is 3+3″.  I’m guessing it wouldn’t like “”6….usually” either.
