Also, I haven't wanted to say anything before now, but as a friend, I feel compelled to speak up about this... In the event of a zombie uprising, your entire family is fucked. Your house is a ground floor dwelling with multiple doors and glass points of entry. I would strongly suggest that you immediately move to a more defensible position, and stock up on ammo and renewable combat options (hand-held weapons that don't require getting too close to the hungry dead).

I've seen too many families torn apart by ravenous ghouls. For the love of God, Joshua, think of your family!

If a three minute hold gives you pause, then perhaps it's time I told you (if you never read it in my old journal) about the three hours I waited for the police to show up after reporting shots fired outside of my apartment. To give you some idea of how close to my apartment it was, I was able to clearly see the shooter (although not while he was shooting) at night, without the aid of my contacts. As if that experience weren't enough to sour my views on the police, when I was assaulted by a customer at work, the police never even showed up (or, at least, they didn't show up in the seven hours before the store closed and we all went home; I can't really say for certain if they came after that).

I consider myself to be fairly liberal. I'm pro-tax, pro-big government (so long as it's smart government, which neither major party seems to be interested in providing), pro-choice, pro-gay and ethnic minority rights, pro-universal health care, etc. Guns are one of the issues where I stop drinking the liberal Kool-Aid. If anything, I think that more people should own guns, and should know how to use them effectively.

No one is coming to save us. Post-Katrina, do you really think that you can rely upon the US government to provide for your safety in the event of an emergency? I decided that I couldn't; I have several weeks worth of canned food and potable water stored in my apartment, along with a propane stove and first aid kit. I'm certified for CPR, and I'm looking to expand my knowledge of first aid at SMC this summer. In my opinion, anyone who doesn't take similar steps is deluding themselves.

I feel similarly about firearms. People are quick to point out that you're more likely to kill yourself or a family member with a gun than you are to kill an intruder. This makes sense, though. We currently have a living situation where strife is at a minimum, our soil is not under regular attack, and our government has not-quite-yet grown intolerable. You may be content to believe that that will always be the case; I am not. The bullets that I own aren't there because I feel that some kid is going to break in for my television. I own them because I want to be prepared for the possibility that our carefully constructed house of cards is going to come tumbling down. Do I believe that it's going to happen? Not necessarily, but I believe that it's possible, and I want to be ready if it happens.

The old saying goes that the following four boxes should be used in the defense of liberty, in descending order: Soap, ballot, jury, ammo. I live in a country that is more and more growing to accept "Free Speech Zones", Diebold voting machines and a Supreme Court that has less and less respect for the Constitution. If things get much worse, what box do I have left?

This is a not-nearly-as-ordered version of what I tried to post earlier. Let's hope it works, this time.

I entered everything, and then didn't think to notepad it. Unfortunately, I then met with our old and dear friend, the Page Cannot Be Displayed screen. I'll try to re-write most of what I wrote, but it will need to be done at some point when I have a few more hours of sleep in me.
